The giveaway is in the title Human Resources.
Although we prefer to use the term "Effective with People".
Most businesses have employees but it is surprising how many don't know how to get the best from them.
The good news is we do, and we are really good at it.
We like to think of ourselves as HR angels working diligently in the background, taking away the people management issues so businesses can focus on making their business bigger & better.
Now that sounds like a winning combination !

Bullying On Social Media
Bullying at work is one area I have been involved in through providing HR services and it is extremely upsetting. I have seen first hand how bullying can affect relationships at work and destroy a persons confidence. It can also have implications on health and wellbeing. Investigatory meetings, grievances, disciplinaries, mediation and even dismissal are part and parcel of managing bullying and...

Newsnight
Last week I was watching Newsnight and to my bemusement someone mentioned 'HR is a technical profession’. Although having a solid foundation in employment legislation and correct procedural and employment practices is important there is much more to HR than it just being brandished as technical.
More importantly HR should contribute to your bottom line through providing proactive...

You're Fired!!
'It's my boardroom, my money' (Lord Sugar)
How true, but how much trouble could you get into if you took that approach with your staff? Some candidates on The Apprentice may not be right for the task in hand and do create a headache for their team and business venture.
Similarly in your business you will have employees who make silly mistakes but it could be you and...

How Healthy Are Your Employees?
For the past few weeks I have been struck with a cold. No sympathy please I realise many people get colds. However not being the type who gets colds very often it made me aware of just how much it affects a persons ability to just get up and get on with their daily routine. In my situation, taking time off to rest is pretty challenging as I have a business to run but my ability to perform at my...

The Human Factor
Over the past couple of weeks I have been involved in providing some advice and support to a client who is on the receiving end of a redundancy process. In my experience I have always considered the ‘Human Factor’ and how employers treat their people when tackling this unfortunate situation. It is always a difficult time when someone is faced with the prospect of their role being made...

The Danger of Assumptions
We all make assumptions don’t we and sometimes they can be wrong. Take for example the other evening. I was in my local grocery store walking down one of the aisles and arrived at the checkout at the same time as a group of young men. They were in their late teens and at first glance looked pretty menacing and a bit cocky. I tentatively asked if they were waiting to pay as they weren’t exactly forming a queue. I thought I was going to be on the receiving end of a verbal licking. The reply from one of them was ‘its okay you go first – sorry to be in the way’ I hadn’t expected such a polite and friendly response. It certainly didn’t match up with my assumption.
They literally changed in front of my eyes, it was quite a surreal moment, and I saw them for what they really were – 6 young lads who were not nearly as confident as they appeared, quite nervous in fact – how bad did I feel?
How easy is it to make assumptions? I was always taught not to judge a book by its cover and I thought I was quite good at this but I got a bit of a wake up call there.
It got me thinking how many assumptions do we make during our working day? I am not talking about financial projections either but the assumptions we make about people we work with. We make judgements without really knowing the facts. Getting to know people and understanding their capabilities is a key learning for everyone in business. How do you know if someone is capable of managing a project for example without getting to know them properly first and what talent they have.
The key learning I would like to share with you today is don’t make assumptions too quickly. Give people a chance. Spend some time with them. Understand what and how they can contribute to business objectives. Develop a relationship with them first and who knows where it could lead in your business.
Bye for now

Baby Talk - Maternity Leave Update
This morning I did a talk at a networking event on current maternity legislation and the options women have available if and when they decide they want to get back into work or perhaps pursue a new career. Therefore I thought it might be useful to share some of this with you today.
The legal bit ........
> To qualify for Statutory Maternity Pay (SMP) you must have 26 weeks continuous...

Inspiration
What have crocodiles and komodo dragons got to do with success in the workplace?
Well, to be honest the object is not important but what is fascinating is people’s passion and drive to be successful.
There is an increasing attitude, by some, that the world owes them a living. Wrong! You and only you are responsible for your success. Be that turning a dream into a reality...
