A year in the life of the ipatter CEO - 08 Feb 2012
There's so much going on in our business at the moment, I'm finding it difficult to sleep as there's so much on my mind! So up with the lark. In fact I got so carried away I ended up leaving late for work and getting stuck in traffic. At least that meant I was able to avoid the M3 drivers, but it did mean I got caught up in traffic! That gave me time to let my eyes wander and I happened upon my middle, that reminded me, I really must lose some weight!
The office was buzzing today and Oli did a great job on the phone and online. I made some good progress with the operations manual for networking and also designed some marketing material for the business.
We managed to communicate all the dates for the launch events for networking across the regions we currently have covered, so it's all hands to the pump to get these events on the road.
One of our BDC's has done a great job today not just signing up accounts for us, but also setting in motion a relationship that will really pay off for all concerned, a real win, win. The part of this I was most pleased about was the level of communication shown to me during the process which made the whole experience a much nicer one. I would say a job well done.
My Leicester and Coventry guys are working well too and I think they will really start to see the rewards from all their efforts. It was also nice today to spend time talking with some customers and get a feel for how we look to them too. In general I think we need to improve in some areas of customer care and communication with prospects.
I will work on this over the next few days and then test to make sure progress is being made in this all important area.
I found it difficult to leave the office as there's so much more needs doing. The journey home gave me time to think about the day and some of the progress we are making. I have a family celebration tonight so no work this evening just a bit of social.
My top tips for the day:
Having a boss who tends to micromanage can be frustrating for all of us. If you have a manager who tries to control too much, it's clear they have forgotten that people need leadership not management. To make things better try these three things:
Don't fight it - Don't push against the behaviour, because that will only cause your manager to distrust you and get even more involved.
Understand the cause - Is your boss under pressure? Does he lack the right skills for the job? Understand what worries your boss and try to dilute his concerns.
Keep you boss in the loop - Micromanagers are often motivated by anxiety. Be proactive and keep your manager informed of your progress. Schedule regular check-ins, or send unprompted emails that help him, or her feel part of the process.
Oh how I wish all my troops would keep me in the loop! Maybe if I become a micromanager they'll practice this advice and keep me in the loop. Loving my life as I do, I've decided not to hold my breath on that one just yet :)
