Bathroom Basics Part 2
Toilets are perhaps not the most glamorous of subjects but worth thinking about none-the-less. Consider both hygiene and comfort as well as clever design tricks such as having a wall mounted toilet pan or concealing the toilet cistern inside a wall. If you only have one toilet in the household and several people needing to use it it may even be worth considering separating the toilet from the bathroom altogether.
If you're the type of person who loves to keep various bathroom products and perfumes etc then you will likely need to consider having a decent amount of bathroom storage space. On the other hand if you are fairly minimalist and don't tend to have too much clutter in your bathroom then storage space won't be such an important consideration. Always remember that bathroom storage space can take up valuable room in a modest sized bathroom so it may be wise to install under-sink vanity units and other space conscious bathroom furniture. If you are planning to keep towels in the bathroom you will need somewhere to hang them. A heated towel rail or equivalent would solve this problem nicely.
Walls
Bathroom walls often need to be waterproof to ensure they do not get damaged, this can mean anything from a coat of waterproof paint through to bathroom tiling and even the most intricate of mosaics. Remember it's your bathroom so make sure it conforms to your own personal tastes as well as others.
Bathroom floors need to be non-slip, waterproof and comfortable on bare feet. Options of material include ceramic tile, stone, vinyl or wood. Always consider any maintenance issues when finalizing your choice.
Bathroom lighting is the perfect was to set the mood in your perfect bathroom as well as illuminate those crucial areas such as the mirror etc. wall-washers, down-lights and up-lights can all be used to create dimension and the illusion of space in the bathroom.
There is nothing worse than a cold bathroom in the middle of winter so your bathroom needs to be sufficiently heated whenever necessary. Remember that if you want under-floor heating you will need to install this right at the beginning of the project or risk having to lay your bathroom floor again as an after-thought. The position of your bathroom radiators will also be paramount.
