Tip of the week: using Windows disk checking
As some of you will remember from my article on Thu 26 May, I feel that defragmentation, unless run in specific situations is quite an over rated task. On the contrary, the disk checking tool is one of the most useful tools provided by Windows. It will correct many file system errors and minor hard drive physical problems.
I would run it monthly to prevent problems building up. Should it detect dodgy sectors or cluster on you hard drive, it will flag them up to the operating system so they are not use (a bit like putting traffic cones on road works).
To run a disk check, go to Computer, then right-click on C: and on the Tools tab, click Check Now and make sure you select both boxes. A restat is requested and the system will automatically run the check on restart.
In Windows XP, should it be too late and your computer not boot up properly due to hard drive problems, you can actually use the tool from the recovery console and it will sort your problem out 75% of the time. It is a bit more technical though but feel free to contact me should you want to know more.

Latest testimonial for VM it
"Upon experiencing problems with my laptop, I needed some assistance. The choice facing me seemed to be to go to a national chain of stores for help, or search for a local firm. While the young gentleman that typically work for the national chains, might have a good knowledge of all things IT, I sought a more personal touch. I looked for a local firm and I came across VM IT Ltd...

Tip of the week: when to defragment
Many people defragment their disks on a regular basis seeing it as the panacea against slow computers. Unfortunately, the impact is most of the time fairly limited.
First, you must have at least 15% free space on your disk for the fragmented files to be temporarily copied before being consolidated.
Second, although degragmenting will improve performance, it will always be negligible...

Delivered disaster recovery presentation to Broadland Business Breakfast on Friday
As part of their emphasis on having business continuity plans, Broadland Business Breakfast asked me to deliver a presentation on the IT side of business continuity, known in the IT industry as Disaster Recovery.
Although the "80% of businesses suffering data loss never recover" seems to be a bit of an urban myth (see a very good link on...

Removing fake antivirus
Who has never got this one? Out of nowhere a popup appears on your computer saying that it is infected with dozens of nasties. Most of the time it has a name vaguely related to Microsoft, Windows or to a known anti-virus brand in the hope to fool you (e.g: Windows Antivirus Center, Malware Tools...). You are advised to click on a link to activate the product and if you are foolish enough to do...
