Touring Tuscany
Enjoy Car Hire have just announced new low prices for car hire in Italy, so we thought we would take a look at one of the most popular regions in Italy, and one which is truly enhanced when hiring a vehicle.
Anyone who enjoys travelling and discovering new places at your own freedom will find many things to see and do in the popular region of Tuscany. Whether it is a day trip, a long weekend, or a weeklong stay you there is plenty to keep you occupied.
Tours in Tuscany can be of several types, from the more classic ones that visit the most beautiful cities in Tuscany to the popular food and wine tours and shopping tours.
For the classical traveller interested in history and art, we would recommend visiting Tuscany's "cities of art" such as Florence, Siena, Pisa and Lucca and to the other well-known areas of the regions, such as Chianti, Val d'Orcia and Maremma. Tuscany is a land of great culinary traditions, precious wines and excellent extra virgin olive oil, so if you prefer sampling the cultural aspects of this region there is plenty here to keep you entertained.
A gastronomic tour is an excellent way to experience the tastes and traditional products of the region. Wine tours also prove very popular and offer an opportunity to visit Tuscany's great wineries and enjoy tastings of Tuscany greatest wines, often accompanied with tastings of other Tuscan specialties and traditional products.
Those who love fashion can enjoy the main shops and outlets of the many top Italian and Tuscan fashion designers found in the region. Anyone who enjoys being outdoors can enjoy tours in Tuscany's picturesque natural parks. There are many thematic, small tours dedicated to Tuscan craftsmanship and the local production of wine, cold cuts and cheeses.
Things to remember:
Basic Road Rules
In towns, speed limit is 50 km/hr rising to 70 km/hr on secondary roads and 110 km/hr on autostrade.
Outside of city centres, all cars and motorcycles need to use headlights.
Roundabouts are common. Cars already on the roundabout generally have the right of way, but this is not always the case. Pay attention to local example.
City Driving
In general, in most cities you should park your car and forget about it. Driving in the historical centre of most towns is either banned or restricted and finding a legal parking spot can be a nightmare. Until you know your way around, park in a designated metered parking area or parking station. If you leave the car away from the centre, you can generally find free street parking.
If you do drive around in the cities, it will be a bit chaotic and unnerving initially. Road rules and traffic lights are generally respected, but many drivers will drive very close to you and many double park (as a way to resolve the problem of looking for and not finding a parking spot).
Never leave anything valuable in your parked vehicle. When possible, do not leave anything in the car at all because the sight of suitcases or bags invites thieves.
