New Volkswagen Up! Review
Volkswagen's new vehicle is marketed as the manufactures first ever group A (mini) car. The new Volkswagen up! will precede the ever so popular VW Polo in terms of size, and although offers nothing innovative in terms of its mechanics, it does offer proven Volkswagen quality with a few nice additions.
The new up! has been released to compete within the mini-economy group of cars, something Volkswagen have not delved into with much frequency. And will go head-to-head with seasoned pros such as the Ford Ka, Renault Twingo, Kia Picanto, Hyundai i10, Toyota Aygo and the Citroen C1. It’s the first mini-economy release from Volkswagen since 2005’s effort VW Fox.
The up! is clever in its design, which seems as if it’s main aim was to maximise cabin space. Inside, the first thing you will notice is the simple, yet distinctive interior design. Seats are comfortable and supportive designed with contrasting trim panels on the squab and back rest. While the vehicle has its heating, ventilation and ancillary controls all displayed centrally on the dashboard. What you probably wouldn’t expect on first viewing of the interior is how the Up’s cabin will accommodate four adults with ease, along with their luggage in the narrow but deep, 251-litre boot.
The 1.0l engine model gives respectable round-town performance despite its 59bhp. It shows its quality and smoothness on the open road despite racking up almost 4000 rpm on the clock at 70 mph. Top speed of 99 mph, and acceleration in at 14.4 secs, it easily stands up against its competitors when it comes to performance. Steering is precise and agile, mainly due to the impressive 0.91 tons kerb weight, body roll is well controlled.
Rather than re-innovating the mini economy car group, Volkswagen have released a very competent vehicle, impressive is the generous accommodation on offer and clever Volkswagen engineering as always. A car which if brought would still stand up to quality in 3 or 4 years time, is somewhat dampened by its lack of innovative new features.
The new Volkswagen Up! is currently being added to the fleet of some our rental partners ready for the summer. If you are planning a trip abroad and looking to hire a small compact vehicle why not head over to www.enjoycarhire.com for a free quote. to check our competitive prices.
